Seeing Ice?

If you see ice on your heat pump, don’t panic!

Your unit is likely going through defrost.

Defrost is activated when the temps of your outside unit drops below 32 degrees. At 32*, frost can form on the outside coil, which can cause damage if it builds up, so defrost cycle kicks in. Your heat pump will switch to a.c mode to warm up the coil and melt the ice.

-outside unit will make a noise and stop, giving the false sense it may have broken.

-steam will come from your outside unit as the coils are hot and melting the ice accumulation

-you may notice emergency/auxiliary mode on at your thermostat as your heat strips (backup heat) have kicked on to keep the air from the vents warm as the unit runs in a.c mode outside
